Youth & Youth Elite

Thousands of kids around the world participate in triathlon each year. Youth participation represents one the fastest growing areas of the sport today. The "Youth" age division is comprised of athletes under the age of 16, with racing age determined on December 31st of the competition year. Youth athletes have the opportunity to compete in two distinct styles of racing. Most youth athletes participate in youth-only triathlons, sometimes called "Kids Triathlons." Age categories are generally broken down into ages 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-15. Distances are short and intended simply to expose our youngest triathletes to basic elements of triathlon and give them a taste of the unique sense of accomplishment that comes with finishing a triathlon.

Youth athletes between the ages of 13 and 15 also have the opportunity to compete in draft-legal triathlons, called Youth Elite Cups. These super-sprint distance races mimic the ITU World Cup and Olympic format of racing. Youth Elites do not have to qualify for these events, but generally should have above-average swim skills, the ability to ride in a peloton, and a strong run.

The focus of youth multi-sport events should be fun. Rather than emphasizing competition at this age, kids, parents, and coaches should focus on enjoyment, and on learning proper skills and healthy exercise habits that will last a lifetime.

Camps

USA Triathlon organizes its series of athlete development camps around two ability levels: Skills Camps for novice-to-intermediate level teens and Select Camps for more experienced, competitive junior athletes. Skills Camps are designed with the novice 12-19 year old in mind. These camps focus on the fundamentals of triathlon's three disciplines. Athletes also are introduced to the basics of sports nutrition and science. Select Camps serve USAT's more experienced, competitive junior athletes. Proficiency in draft-legal racing is the focus of these camps, although the core skills apply to draft-legal and non-drafting alike. Athletes spend time honing race tactics, improving their transitions, and mastering bike handling. Extra emphasis is placed on nutrition and sports science, as well as developing training programs that balance the demands of high school athletes with their involvement in triathlon. Camps are staffed by USAT certified coaches and guest coaches with single sport expertise. Most camps run 5 to 7 days. For athletes under the age of 12, USAT recommends a day camp or clinic format. Aside from the camps and clinics listed below, USAT sanctions a number of privately run camps and clinics, some of which focus on youth and junior athletes. Information about these events can be located on the USAT Event Calendar using the Advanced Search feature.  Read More READ MORE
