Race Conduct: Glass Containers

This week's rule is 3.4j — Glass Containers.

The rule bans glass containers of any kind from the race site, including transition and the bike and run course. The rule was enacted to protect participants from the possibility of broken glass cutting feet or damaging bike tires.

Sports drinks and juices were commonly sold in glass containers during the 1980s when the rules were first published and it was a common violation seen on the head referee's report. While most beverages come in plastic containers today, the rule is still needed to protect the safety of all our participants.

Here's the rule:

3.4j. Glass Containers.
No participant shall utilize any glass bottles or glass containers at any time during the event. Any violation of this section shall result in a variable time penalty, unless the head referee determines that such conduct constituted endangerment under section 3.4(l), in which case the penalty shall be disqualification.
