Certified coaches must recertify every two years in order to remain informed on the latest knowledge and expertise and to provide service and support for developing USA Triathlon coaching programs and triathlon in general. Recertification also provides an accountability for maintenance of the coaching certification.
USA Triathlon Certified Coaches must submit their recertification materials by their certification expiration date. Coaches who do not submit recertification materials by their expiration date are not eligible for recertification under the normal recertification policy. Please see the bottom of this page for the late recertification policies. If you have any questions regarding the recertification policy, please contact the Education Program Coordinator.
It is highly suggested that coaches submit their recertification as early as August 2015 to avoid delays or penalties for missing deadlines. Any recertification not completed (submitted with the required documents) will be subject to any late fees. Extensions will not be given for incomplete recertifications even if submitted before December 31, 2015.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
Level I Certified Coaches must earn 15 CEUs for recertification during their 2 year certification period. Level II, Level II Endurance, and Level III Certified Coaches must earn 20 CEUs during their 2 year certification period for recertification. Five (5) of these CEUs must come from a USAT course (USAT CEUs) as found on the CEU Schedule. Please note that the USOC SafeSport program grant 3 USAT CEUs.
Any additional CEUs earned cannot be carried over to a future recertification.
Credit for non-USAT courses are awarded with a maximum of 5 non-USAT CEUs per course.
Recertification of any certification is worth half the CEUs of the original certification.
USA Triathlon reserves the right to assign or deny a CEU value to NON-USAT seminars and conferences. CEU values are based upon relevancy to triathlon coaching and are assigned by USA Triathlon, not by what another organization assigns.
Coaches are responsible for tracking their CEUs, getting NON-USAT courses accepted for NON-USAT CEUs, and recording their CEUs in their recertification application. USA Triathlon is not responsible for tracking individual coaches CEUs.
Continuing education does NOT include the daily activities of a coach such as attending training, leading training rides, meeting with athletes, etc.
Late Recertification Policy

Late recertification submitted after December 31, 2015 (one year after recert is due): Coaches must retake the coaching certification exam that coincides with their coaching level and pay the $100 fee to take the exam. In addition, coaches must complete all the requirements listed above as well as the regular recertification requirements.
Late recertification submitted after December 31, 2016 (two years after recert is due): Coaches must retake the highest level clinic they have attended and complete all the requirements that are required to attend a clinic of their coaching level.
Starting in 2014, the USOC mandated every National Governing Body to require education and training concerning athlete safety for all any certified coaches. To meet that requirement, all USAT certified coaches must complete the USOC SafeSport program in order to recertify every two years.
To prove completion, coaches must upload a certificate of completion. Instructions on how to complete the USOC SafeSport program can be found here. For questions, please contact the Coaching Specialty Manager.
