Youth and Junior - Effective Nutrition Training

The two most effective exercises I have found to teach kids proper nutrition are

#1 - Teach them to read nutrition labels and then ask them to go to the store with their parents and pick out a healthy cereal.  It will get them involved in the food choices.  It will also spur parents to start thinking about making healthy choices for the kids becuase they know the kids will be looking.

#2 - This is a two part exercise.  Part one is to have them fill out a nutrition log for one day.  Part two is analyzing what they ate.  To do this, I have then write each food item on a post it or scrap of paper.  Then, I use the USDA Portion Plate to have them place they papers in the appropriate spots.  This could also be done with Bob Seebohar's Food Target.  This will show them where there nutrients are coming from and also where their "misses" are.
