Buying a Triathlon Bike

I am an experienced road biker who has gotten into triathlons this year.  I've decided to finish out this tri season with my road bike and would like to purchase a tri bike for next year.  I will be 60 years old next season and think I can be competitive in my age group.  What is the minimum I could spend on a triathlon bike to get most of the benefit?  In other words, I don't want to spend thousands more than I really need for my level, just to get minimal improvement.
