Team Championship
Each year, USA Triathlon recognizes the top performing Youth Elite/Junior Elite development team based on performance at the designated national-level Youth Elite/Junior Elite Cups and National Championship. While membership on a development team is not required in order to compete at these events, these racing teams add an additional dimension to the draft-legal racing experience. To learn more about the scoring system, review the Junior Elite Series Guide.

Talent ID Races
Junior Talent ID Races provide a gateway into the sport of triathlon and a starting point for talent identification. Participants experience triathlon in its traditional, non-drafting format, officiated using USA Triathlon Rules.
These sprint-distance races have been selected because of their “junior-friendly” atmosphere and age-appropriate courses. There is no requirement to qualify and athletes of all abilities are welcome (subject to race director discretion). USAT frequently reviews the results for talent identification purposes.

Draft-Legal Race Calendar
Teenage athletes who aspire to national and international-level competition must develop the speed and skill for success in the draft-legal format. USA Triathlon coordinates a series of draft-legal racing opportunities for this purpose. While not every teenage athlete aspires to race as an elite, developing the skills associated with draft-legal triathlon at an early age — a strong swim, superior bike handling, quick transitions, and the ability to run fast off the bike — will serve all athletes well as they progress as collegiate and age group competitors.
USAT Junior Elite Series
The USAT Junior Elite Series consists of the three Youth Elite Cups and the three Junior Elite Cups plus the USAT Youth Elite and Junior Elite National Championship. Each of the "Cups" serves as a qualifier for Nationals, with the Top 20 athletes in each division from each Cup advancing to Nationals. Series events are scheduled to take place three to six weeks apart and are spread across the three geographic zones...East, West and Central. Athletes may compete in any and all qualifiers - regardless of where they reside. Athletes score points at each event to determine a Series Champion and towards seasonal draft-legal rankings.

USAT Junior Elite Cups
Junior Elite Cups are draft-legal sprint distance triathlons open to athletes 16 to 19 years old. Junior Elite Cups are the most competitive junior triathlons in the United States. The competition distances are 750 meter swim, 20 kilometer (4x5k laps) bike, and 5k (2x2.5k lap) run. These events serve as qualifiers for the Junior Elite National Championships, contested at the same distances, and provide the pathway into international competition. Juniors looking for additional draft-legal racing opportunities may consider entering a U25 Elite Development Race or a Youth F1 triathlon.

U25 Elite Development Races
U25 Elite Development Races are draft-legal sprint distance triathlons open to athletes 20 to 25 years old [if the race is not co-located with a Junior Elite Cup, the minimum age will be 16]. Athletes over the age of 25 may request an invitation from USAT High Performance. Juniors looking for additional draft-legal racing opportunities should look at the Junior Elite Cups listed above.
The first three (3) finishers in the U25 Elite Development Race will become eligible for a USAT Elite Triathlete License. These athletes must finish within five percent (5%) of the winner’s overall time. If there are fewer than 30 starters, only two (2) athletes will earn eligibility. If there are fewer than 20 starters, only one (1) athlete will earn eligibility. If Elite license holders or non-U.S. athletes are permitted to start in the race, elite eligibility spots will roll down to the next amateur provided he or she is within five percent (5%) of the first amateur’s overall time. Elite and non-U.S. starters will not count toward the total number of starters used to determine the number of Elite licenses awarded.
