In 2013, USA Triathlon launched the Super Sprint Series to introduce a new format of triathlon to the United States, providing an incredibly fast, spectator-friendly event featuring the world’s best elite triathletes. The venues put fans in the center of the action, with athletes completing two continuous, non-stop circuits of the same course.
The USA Triathlon Super Sprint Series opener was held in San Diego on April 24, following the 2013 Omegawave World Triathlon San Diego. Sarah Groff (Hanover, N.H.), who earned a fourth-place finish at the 2012 London Olympic Games, bested the women’s field with a time of 40 minutes even, while Australian Aaron Royle finished in 37:10 to win the men’s race.
Las Vegas was host to the Super Sprint Triathlon Grand Prix, the second installment of the USA Triathlon Super Sprint Series, held at night under lights outside the Las Vegas Convention Center on Sept. 19. Gwen Jorgensen (St. Paul, Minn.) captured the win in 48:01, and Peter Kerr of Australia edged out the men's field by three seconds, logging a time of 43:56. Jorgensen and Eric Lagerstrom (Gresham, Ore.) earned USA Triathlon Elite Sprint National titles.
Katie Hursey (Hampstead, Md.) and Ben Kanute (Tucson, Ariz.) ended their 2013 seasons on a high note at Mission Bay’s Rose Marie Starns South Shores Park, running their way to the top of the podium at the Fearless Pro Super Sprint Triathlon, the season finale of the USA Triathlon Super Sprint Series.Sanctioning Status: USAT SANCTIONED
