Team USA
Team USA Qualifications
The 2012 Olympic Distance National Championship will qualify athletes for the 2013 International Triathlon Union (ITU) Short Course (Olympic Distance) Triathlon World Championship. This race is scheduled for London, England. There will be 18 slots on Team USA available per age group, with slots rolling down to 25th place after the age-up rule.
Team USA Age-Up Rule
At 2012 Nationals, athletes will race in their appropriate age groups based on their age as of December 31, 2012. Awards will be issued based on those results. If an athlete "ages up" into another age group in 2013, a separate set of results will be issued accounting for those athletes who aged up and Team USA slots will be awarded based on these results. So their finish time will be compared to those athletes in the older age group. For example, if John Doe is going to be 49 years old by December 31, 2012, he will age-up up into the 50-54 age group for the 2013 World Championships since he will be 50 years old by December 31, 2013. Thus, for Team USA qualifying purposes, his time at the qualification event will be compared to the men currently in the 50-54 age group. We will post the age-up results at the awards ceremony.
Who can qualify for Team USA?
All athletes eligible to represent the United States must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
OR
- Be a U.S. national – someone who has resided in the US for three consecutive years and has not competed for their country of citizenship in the prior year.
Team USA eligible athletes must not have competed for their country of citizenship in the prior year. Athletes who choose to be recognized as nationals who have competed for their country of citizenship in the last year may get dispensation by obtaining a letter from the National Federation of their home country allowing competition as a USA athlete.

Anti-Doping
Athletes competing in events sanctioned by any National Governing Body (NGB), including USA Triathlon, should be aware that drug testing is an important part of protecting the rights of clean athletes at all levels of competition and age levels, in both in-competition and out-of-competition settings. All USA Triathlon-sanctioned events are subject to testing, including the Olympic Distance National Championship.
The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) is the national anti-doping organization for the Olympic and Paralympic Movement in the United States. USADA provides many resources for athletes to better understand the anti-doping program and their personal rights and responsibilities.
All athletes are encouraged to visit the USADA website — www.usada.org — for more information on the sample collection process and their anti-doping rights and responsibilities. Athletes interested in learning more about what substances are prohibited should view the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.
Since athletes are responsible at all times for the substances in their bodies, it is very important to understand what substances are prohibited. USADA provides several options for athletes to check if the substances they are taking are prohibited or not prohibited. Athletes can check the status of their medications using the Global Drug Reference Online resource, Global DRO, or download the free mobile application of GlobalDRO onto their smart phones. To download the mobile application, access the internet from your smartphone and go to www.GlobalDRO.com, bookmark the icon to your phone and search medications when you have access to the internet. Any additional questions about prohibited substances can be directed to USADA’s Drug Reference Line at 800-233-0393.
If an athlete is taking a medication that is medically necessary and is prohibited, they may need a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). There are varying categories based on competition level, and detailed information about the TUE process can be found at http://www.usada.org/tue. A TUE allows an athlete with a legitimate medical need for an otherwise prohibited substance to use that substance in sport with prior approval. All TUEs must be submitted to tue@usada.org or faxed to 719-785-2029 for processing. USADA has the authority to process all International Triathlon Union TUEs. Those U.S. athletes competing in the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) events by virtue of their USA Triathlon membership, are required to follow the TUE Policies of USADA and should contact USADA to confirm if a TUE is required.
It is the responsibility of all athletes to compete clean, and they are encouraged to review the resources linked here or to contact USADA with any questions.
