Dr. Darren Smith is a high performance triathlon coach who sets the benchmark for others to chase.
Darren had a record 6 athletes from his ‘Dsquad’ competing in the London Olympics triathlon events including the silver medal winner, Sweden’s Lisa Norden and the USA’s Sarah Groff (4th Place). In 2012 he was also the first coach in the history of the sport to have the gold and silver medalists overall in the ITU World Championship Series.
In 2012 he coached athletes to 1st and 3rd at the 2012 HyVee Triathlon, and in long course he helped Chris McCormack to a World LC win and Bart Aernouts to 11th at Hawaii IM, and fastest run time, in his second ever IM.
After a rebuilding phase following the 2012 season his current short course triathlon squad have already racked up some impressive results: 2 world cup podiums from male athletes including American Matt Chrabot, others with top 10 results at world series events or ITU points race wins and a very talented group of females including 4 of the top 8 in the current World Series rankings, and others with world cup wins to their names. Non draft athletes include Australian Annabel Luxford who won Auckland 70.3 race and podiumed at the recent Rev 3 Quassy race. He also guided Kat Baker to a breakout 2nd at the 2013 Wildflower race.
An Australian national, Darren has training bases in Canberra, Australia in the off-season, plus Sedona, Arizona and Morzine, France during the racing phases. He will be moving to the USA later in 2013. (Twitter: coachdaz)
