What is an annual membership?
An annual membership allows an athlete to compete in USA Triathlon sanctioned races while receiving many benefits which includes: a subscription to the quarterly USA Triathlon publication, inclusion in the USA Triathlon national ranking system after competing in at least three USAT sanctioned triathlon events or two duathlon, aquathlon or off-road triathlon events, discounts from USA Triathlon sponsors, as well as eligibility to qualify as a Team USA member and compete at ITU World Championship events. An annual membership also includes unlimited one-day licenses for races occurring within the membership period.

What is a one-day license?
A one-day license allows an athlete to compete in a USA Triathlon sanctioned race without purchasing an annual membership.  one-day licenses are purchased for a specific race, are non-transferable, and are non-refundable.

Why do I have to purchase a one-day license or annual membership for my event?
When a race director sanctions with USA Triathlon, it is required for each participant to purchase either a one-day license or hold an annual membership in order to participate in said event.

How do I become an annual member?
The fastest way to purchase an annual membership is through our Membership Dashboard (http://usatriathlon.org). Once the transaction is completed, you will be able to print your membership card as the account will be created instantaneously.

Other options for purchasing an annual membership include:

  1. Print an application and mail, email, or fax it to our National Office (Click here to print a Membership Application)

5825 Delmonico Dr, Ste 200
Colorado Springs, CO 80919
Fax : 719-955-2685
membership@usatriathlon.org

  1. Purchase is possible when registering for a race that is using a Real Time Account Verification (RTAV) registration company
  2. Paper application at your race packet pick up. (Anticipate a 6 week time frame for processing)

If you have any concerns about your membership, please contact the Membership Department via email or phone (719-955-2807).

How do I purchase a one-day license?
There are two ways to purchase a one-day license. Most event registration processes will allow the purchase of a one-day license. If the option is not available during registration the race director will have the option to purchase the one-day license at the race packet pickup. One-day licenses are NOT sold directly through USA Triathlon.

Is a USAT annual membership based on a calendar year or a revolving year?
USAT memberships are based on a revolving year. Your annual membership is good for one year to the end of the month; for example if you purchase a membership on June 8th, it would not expire until June 30th of the following year.

I forgot my USAT card at home. Do I need to present it at a USAT sanctioned event?
In most cases, YES. If you cannot provide proof of membership, you will have to purchase a one-day license if you wish to compete. Keep in mind that we do not issue reimbursements for one-day licenses purchased by annual members. However, we do offer a credit towards your next renewal. Note: the credit of a one-day license must be applied at the time of the annual membership purchase. To get the credit, email the one-day license receipt or proof of purchase to membership@usatriathlon.org.  Our staff will then have an email sent to you with a link to purchase your membership at the discounted rate.  If for some reason this process will not work our staff will direct you on alternative options.

When would I not have to provide proof of membership?
If you are participating in a USA Triathlon National event or an event that uses a RTAV Registration platform, all membership verification is done at the time of registration. All you will need to show at packet pickup is your driver’s license. This is also subject to the Race Director’s rules. Please contact them for proper procedures for their race.

How are the membership monies being used?
Membership monies are used for the development, research, and upkeep of USA Triathlon age-group programs such as championships, event sanctioning, officiating, rankings, membership, media, etc. There is a misconception that membership dollars fund professional athletes. While some funds are allotted to training and development, professional athletes are primarily funded through sponsorships and U.S. Olympic Committee support.

What does this excess medical coverage cover?
Excess medical coverage is provided from USA Triathlon through Esix Global.

Be advised that coverage may not apply to each and every claim. Additionally, coverage only extends to participants that have purchased a USA Triathlon one-day license or annual license and were injured through participation in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event.

If you have questions about a claim please call Sean Lankie at 770.449.5559 or email slankie@esixglobal.com.

How does the excess medical coverage work?
This coverage is secondary to your primary health insurance plan. The coverage extends only to participation in an USA Triathlon sanctioned event and is only available after the injured party has filed with their primary insurance policy carrier. A deductible does apply for this excess coverage (anywhere from $250 to $1,000 out of pocket and possibly more for uncovered expenses).

What do I do if I’m injured at the event and have purchased an annual membership or a one-day license?
If injured while participating in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event, you may file a claim that is over and above what your own health care insurance provides. A deductible does apply for this excess coverage.

Follow these steps if you wish to file a claim:

  1. Complete the USAT Medical Claim form. The race director can provide the form or email eventservices@usatriathlon.org for one.
  2. Follow the directions on the second page of the USAT Medical Claim form carefully. Submit the requested information to the address provide on the form but keep originals for your files and send only copies.

What happens if I participate in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event without purchasing a one-day license or an annual membership?
No excess medical coverage is available to anyone who violates USA Triathlon sanction rules and competes without purchasing a one-day license or annual membership.

Any athlete who intentionally participates in an event despite lack of membership or ineligibility for the relevant membership class shall be suspended or barred from membership in USA Triathlon and barred from participation in any sanctioned event for a period of up to one year.

I want to sign up for multiple events that sell out quickly. What is the best plan of action to ensure smooth registration?
Purchasing or renewing online directly with USA Triathlon (www.usatriathlon.org) updates your membership instantaneously. It is best to renew your membership through USAT before registering for your events.

I am registering for an event that is outside of my current active membership period. Why is the registration company making me renew early?
To participate in USA Triathlon sanctioned events you need to have an annual membership that is valid for the race day, not the day you are registering. If a race is taking place outside your current membership period you will have to extend your current annual membership or purchase a one-day license for that race.

To streamline processes for Athletes and Race Directors alike, USA Triathlon has put in place a membership validation process which checks if your membership is valid on the race date. If your membership is not valid, you will be given the options to either renew your membership (one year will be added to your current expiration date) or to purchase a one-day license (which can later be applied towards your renewal).

I am trying to log in to my account but keep getting an error message that my account already exists. What do I do?
There are a couple of reasons why this could be happening:

  1. If you have ever been a member of USA Triathlon it is likely that your membership profile still exists in the database. Try the “reset password” link to have a new password sent to the email address listed on the membership profile. If you do not receive an email or do not remember which email is listed on your account, please contact the Membership Department via email or phone (719-955-2807).
  2. If you have never been a member of USA Triathlon but have participated in a previous event under a one-day license, you are probably in our system due to uploaded results. If you cannot log in to that account please contact the Membership Department via email or phone (719-955-2807).
  3. You may have two accounts in our system with the same email listed. Contact the membership department by email or phone (719-955-2807) to have the accounts merged together.
  4. Your email address is listed on another athletes membership profile (usually a child or spouse). Because the email address is the unique identifier to each individual's account, an email address can only be used by one athlete. Contact the membership department via email or phone (719-955-2807) for assistance logging in.

My membership number appears to have changed since my last active membership. Should I be worried?
Your number may change if you do not renew your membership through your USA Triathlon online account or if you renewed through an event under a nickname. This can affect your rankings (as your results may be split between the two accounts). It is a good idea to contact the membership department via email or phone (719-955-2807) so that we can transfer your history to the new member number and ensure that all of your results are tied to the one account.

Why do I have to sign the waiver every year if I am an annual member?
Waivers are only valid for a 12 month membership period and therefore need to be signed at every purchase or renewal. Items may change on the waiver from year to year and thus it is important that USA Triathlon ensures all athletes are aware of these changes.

How do I log in to my USA Triathlon Membership Profile?
Please visit www.usatriathlon.org, you will find the log in area in the top left section of the page. You can log in using your email address and your password.

Note: If you have not created a password or have forgotten your password please use the “forgot password” link to have one emailed to you. Should you not see the email in your inbox, be sure to first check your spam/junk folder. If the auto email is not there, please contact the Membership Department via email or phone (719-955-2807) for assistance.

How do I change the password on my membership profile?
Once you are logged in to your membership profile, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

  1. Click the red “My Account” button next to your name.
  2. Click on the red “Profile” tab at the top of the screen.

  1. Click the red “My Account” button next to your name.
  2. On the left hand side of the screen there are several "common task" links. Click on the “change email” link to enter a new email address.

My date of birth is incorrect on my membership profile, how do I correct this?
To correct your date of birth please contact the membership team via email or phone (719-955-2807).

Does my name on my membership card need to match my driver’s license/government issued photo identification?
Yes. During packet pickup you will need to show your membership card along with a government issued photo id. It will cause fewer questions and hassle if both cards show the same name.

Can I cancel and/or defer my membership?
All memberships sold have a no refund/deferment/transfer policy.

Do I need to purchase more than one one-day licenses if I do more than one race within an event?

No. The basic rule of thumb is that one one-day license will cover all the races (or camp/clinic meetings) within one sanctioned event. For example, an event offers three races with two on Saturday and one on Sunday. An athlete can participate in all three races under one one-day license.

If an event or camp/clinic spans multiple weekends (i.e. 6/16, 7/16, 8/16, 9/16) do I need to purchase a one-day license for each race date?
Yes. An athlete would be required to purchase a one-day license for each race date. Reoccurring events are sanctioned individually and are treated like unique races.

If an event or camp/clinic is over the span of a 12 month period, do I need to purchase more than one one-day license?
As long as there is only one sanction application covering all the meetings, the athlete will only be required to purchase one one-day license. An example of this is a camp/clinic occurring over the course of two months with multiple meetings and was sanctioned under one application. One one-day license would cover the athlete for all the meetings of this camp/clinic.

However, if it is eight separate, stand-alone clinics that have their own sanction application, the athlete will need to purchase a one-day license for each clinic they attend.

If my event is canceled will I be reimbursed for this one-day license?
In the instance that a the Race Director has a 100% refund policy, due to the cancellation of the event, USA Triathlon will honor that refund policy and return the athletes one-day license purchase.

I purchased a one-day license and I want to apply it towards an annual membership but lost my code. How can I go about retrieving it?
All one-day license codes are stored in the USA Triathlon database. Simply contact the Membership Department via email or phone (719-955-2807) and we can retrieve that code for you. Please Note: This credit can only be applied towards the purchase of an Age Group License.  Credit of a one-day license cannot be applied to an Elite License purchase.

I purchased a one-day license, how do I provide proof of purchase at packet pickup?
One-day licenses will NOT receive any type of card. Most race directors will have a record showing that you purchased your one-day license. However, you can print out your receipt and take it with you as proof of purchase.

I submitted my annual membership application via mail/fax/email, but I am not updated in the system. What can I do?

Contact the membership department via email or phone (719-955-2807) to update.

My membership number appears to have changed since my last active membership. Should I be worried? Your number may change if you do not renew your membership through your online account or if you renewed through an event under a nickname.

Does my name on my membership card need to match my driver’s license/government issued photo identification?

    Membership Card

I recently submitted my annual membership application; however I have not received my plastic membership card to show proof of membership at my race. What can I do?
You can print off a paper copy of your membership by logging in to your Membership Dashboard (http://usatriathlon.org). This printed copy will suffice as proof of membership.

How long does it take to receive my USAT membership packet?
It generally takes 2-3 weeks for your membership packet to be delivered in the mail from the time your application is received in the National Office. You can always look at your membership information and print a paper membership card on your online Membership Dashboard (http://usatriathlon.org) to use in the meantime

I forgot my USAT card at home. Do I need to present it at a USAT sanctioned event?
In most cases YES. If you cannot provide proof of membership, you will have to purchase a one-day license if you wish to compete. Keep in mind that we do not issue reimbursements for one-day licenses purchased by annual members. However, we do offer a credit towards your next renewal.

When would I not have to show proof of membership?

I have misplaced my membership card, how can I receive another one?

    1. Through a race registration done on Active.com. (Your account will be updated within 24 business hours and e can then provide you with your USAT number). You will be notified via email once your membership has been updated.
    2. Through a race registration done on one of USAT’s Real Time Account Validation vendors (RTAV) that directed you to USAT’s website to purchase your membership. Your account will be updated instantly and you will receive your number at the end of the purchase process.

Once on www.usatriathlon.org, you will find the login in the top left section of the page. You can login using your email address and your password.

Note: If you have not created a password or have forgotten your password please use the “forgot password” link to have one emailed to you. Should you not see the email in your inbox, be sure to check your spam/junk folder.

My membership number has appeared to have changed since my last active membership. Should I be worried?
Your number may change if you do not renew your membership through your online account or if you renewed through an event under a nickname. This can affect your rankings (as your results may be split between the two accounts). It is a good idea to contact the membership department via email or phone (719-955-2807) so that we can transfer your history to the new member number and ensure that all of your results are tied to the one account.

There is a one business day turnaround time between your purchase with Active and the update of your membership with USA Triathlon.

I want to sign up for multiple events that sell out quickly. What is the best plan of action to ensure smooth registration?
Because purchasing/renewing online directly with USA Triathlon (www.usatriathlon.org) is instantaneous, it is best to renew your membership on your Membership Dashboard before registering for your events.

I am registering for an event that is outside of my current active membership period. Why is Active.com making me renew early?
To participate in USA Triathlon sanctioned events you need have an annual membership that is valid for the day of the event, not the day you are registering. You will have to extend your current annual membership or purchase a one-day license for that event.

To streamline processes for Athletes and Race Directors alike, USA Triathlon has put in place a membership validation process which checks if your membership is valid on the race date. If not, you will be given the options to either renew your membership (1 year will be added to your current expiration date) or to purchase a one-day license (which can later be applied to your renewal).
