Laura Bennett will look to build on her strong showing at Hy-Vee in Hamburg.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Olympians Laura Bennett and Jarrod Shoemaker headline a group of 11 Americans scheduled to compete this weekend at the fourth stop of the 2010 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series in Hamburg, Germany.
The seven-race WCS is a key proving ground for the United States’ top triathletes hoping for a slot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team. In addition to racing for WCS points, athletes will also be looking to score points toward securing a spot for their country at the 2012 Olympic Triathlon in London.
The men are scheduled to race at 7:30 a.m. EDT Saturday, followed by the women at 9:30 a.m. EDT Sunday. A live webcast of both races will be available from ITU at triathlonlive.tv, and NBC Universal Sports will air the races on delay. Click here for more on the event from ITU.
On the men’s side, Shoemaker (Maynard, Mass.) will look to defend his 2009 win in Hamburg on his 28th birthday. He is currently 10th in the WCS series rankings after logging back-to-back top-10 finishes in Seoul and Madrid, as well as a ninth-place showing at the June 13 Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup.
Chris Foster (Redondo Beach, Calif.), Mark Fretta (Portland, Ore.), Kevin Collington (Orlando, Fla.) and Ben Collins (Seattle, Wash.) all stand among the top 80 in the WCS series rankings and will be in action Saturday. Collins is fresh off a July 10 win at the San Francisco ITU Pan American Cup.
Manuel Huerta (Miami, Fla.) rounds out the American contingent. Click here for a full men’s start list.
In Sunday’s women’s race, Bennett (Boulder, Colo.) will toe the starting line in her first WCS event since finishing 14th in the opener in Sydney in April. Bennett posted her top performance of 2010 last month when she was the top American at Hy-Vee with a sixth-place finish. Bennett is currently 27th in the WCS series rankings.
Jillian Petersen (St. Louis, Mo.) will be the top-rated American in action in Hamburg, as she sits 23rd in the series rankings through three events. Jenna Shoemaker (Los Angeles, Calif.), 31st in the series rankings, Sarah Groff (Hanover, N.H.), who ranks 39th, and Margaret Shapiro (Herndon, Va.) also are scheduled to be in action. Shoemaker is coming off a runner-up finish at the Philadelphia Triathlon. Click here for a full women’s start list.
