COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Three Americans made their way to the podium in Hamburg, and the Wassner twins took first and second in New York to highlight the weekend’s triathlon action.

USA Triathlon takes a look back at last weekend’s action and looks ahead to this week’s biggest races on the elite calendar in what has become a regular weekly feature on usatriathlon.org.

Shoemaker Continues Run of Top-10s; Huerta Breaks Through
USA Triathlon National Team standout Jarrod Shoemaker placed seventh Saturday to record a third straight top-10 finish in the 2010 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series.  

Racing on his birthday, Shoemaker (Maynard, Mass.) posted a time of 1 hour, 44 minutes, 10 seconds in the Olympic-distance event to record a season-best finish on the WCS circuit. With his performance, Shoemaker moves to ninth in the WCS series rankings and is now the top-rated American male.

Joining Shoemaker in the top 15 Saturday was Manuel Huerta (Miami, Fla.), who raced to a 13th-place finish in just his second career WCS start. He finished in 1:44:39, less than 30 seconds off Shoemaker’s pace. Click here for more in USA Triathlon’s recap.

Bennett, Groff Post Strong Showings in Hamburg
Americans Laura Bennett and Sarah Groff stayed with the lead pack to nab top-10 finishes in Sunday's 2010 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series race.

After a fast start on the swim, Bennett (Boulder, Colo.) crossed the finish line in seventh place with a time of 1:54:04. This is her second straight top-10 finish following her sixth place in last month's Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup.

Groff (Hanover, N.H.) finished just behind Bennett in eighth with a time of 1:54:36, racking up her second top-10 finish of the season after finishing fifth in the season opener in Mooloolaba back in March. Click here to read USAT’s full recap.

Wassners Go One-Two in New York
In Sunday’s elite race at the Nautica New York City Triathlon, Rebeccah Wassner (New Paltz, N.Y.) was the repeat winner in 2:00:25, and her twin sister Laurel Wassner (New York, N.Y.) edged Nicole Kelleher (Mercer Island, Wash.) for second. Filip Ospaly of the Czech Republic was the men’s winner in 1:46:28, ahead of runner-up David Thompson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and third-place finisher Kyle Leto (Walnut Creek, Calif. Chrabot Shines in French Grand Prix Event
To prep for next weekend’s London ITU race, national teamer Matt Chrabot (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished fifth out of 90 competitors Sunday in a French Grand Prix sprint-distance event in Paris. He covered the course in 51:47 for one of the top performances by a Grand Prix rookie. Defending ITU champion Alistair Brownlee of Great Britain was the winner.

Vanlandingham Wins XTERRA Mountain Championship
Shonny Vanlandingham (Durango, Colo.) made a huge move on the bike to earn the win the XTERRA Mountain Championship in Avon, Colo., in 2:31:58 on Saturday, as Coloradans swept the women’s podium. Seth Wealing (Boulder, Colo.) was second on the men’s side and was the top American finisher. Click here for a full recap from XTERRA.

Two Americans Podium at Ironman 70.3 Racine
T.J. Tollakson (Des Moines, Iowa) and Desiree Ficker (Austin, Texas) both placed third on Sunday at the Ironman 70.3 Racine. Tollakson finished in 4:00:36, and Ficker covered the course in 4:22:51. Click here for a full recap from Ironman.

Lieto Takes Vineman Ironman 70.3
Chris Lieto (Danville, Calif.) was victorious in his home state Saturday at Sonoma County’s Vineman Ironman 70.3 by nearly six minutes in 3:54:05. James Cotter (Austin, Texas) was third, and Tyler Stewart (Novato, Calif.) was the top American in the women’s race in 4:25:12. Visit ironman.com for a full recap.
