COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – In conjunction with the 2010 Rocky Mountain State Games, nearly 70 of the United States’ top rising multisport stars will be in action Saturday in a USA Triathlon Elite Development Race at Colorado Springs’ Memorial Park. Additionally, more than 30 of the country’s top young triathletes are slated to compete in a Youth Elite race.

Highlighting the Elite Development Race field are 13 athletes that are a part of USAT’s Collegiate Recruitment Program who are currently attending a training camp in Colorado Springs. Headed by Olympian Barb Lindquist, the Collegiate Recruitment Program aims to expose collegiate swimmers and runners that have exhausted their athletic eligibility to the possibility of making a career out of triathlon.

Saturday’s draft-legal event features a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike and a 5-kilometer run. For many of the athletes, Saturday will mark their first experience with draft-legal racing, which is utilized on the International Triathlon Union circuit and in the Olympic Games.

A pair of 2010 USAT national champions will be in action Saturday in Nicole Kelleher (Mercer Island, Wash.), who captured the women’s collegiate national title in April for the University of Virginia, and Kaleb VanOrt (Mishawaka, Ind.), who ran collegiately at Notre Dame and won the overall age group duathlon national title in April.

Lauren Goldstein-Kral (Shaker Heights, Ohio), Gwen Jorgensen (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Lindsay Woodward (Gainesville, Fla.), who represented the U.S. at May’s FISU World University Championships, are also scheduled to compete Saturday. Jorgensen took second in just her second-ever triathlon at the Valencia, Spain, event. Goldstein-Kral is a member of USAT’s Project 2016 program.

Additionally, Lauren Goss (Mount Pleasant, S.C.), who competes collegiately for Clemson University and qualified for the 2010 ITU Under-23 World Championship with a fourth-place finish at the Coteau-du-Lac ITU Pan American Cup last month, is scheduled to race, as is Kaitlin Shiver (Satellite Beach, Fla.), who was the top overall women’s finisher at the 2009 USAT Age Group National Championship.

The Elite Development Men’s Race begins at 9:15 a.m., followed by the women’s event at 10:30 a.m. For ages 13-15, the Youth Elite events feature a 400m swim, a 10k draft-legal bike and a 2.5k run. These races are slated to start at 11:45 a.m. and 12:40 p.m., respectively. Age group races for the Rocky Mountain State Games begin at 6:45 a.m.
