Duathletes Claim Spots for Worlds

Over 450 athletes braved the sweltering heat to conquer the hilly courses of the USA Triathlon Long Course Duathlon National Championship, the World's Toughest Half and the Auburn International Triathlon on Sunday.

Overall Duathlon National Championship winners Nicholas Thompson and Kathryn Kasischke were among the athletes who qualified for the International Triathlon Union World Duathlon Championships on August 10 in Geel, Belgium. Eight Team USA slots per age group were up for grabs in Auburn.

"With the combination of the heat and the intensity of the course, this race truly forced each athlete to empty the tank and leave it all on the course," said Gina Zaccagnini, USA Triathlon multisport development coordinator and Team USA manager. "These duathletes did a phenomenal job and set a high standard for the type of athleticism you can expect to see at nationals."

Thompson, 26, won with a time of 4 hours, 22 minutes, 10 seconds, defeating 30-year-old Josh Beck by 29 seconds.

Kathryn Kasischke, 32, was the top woman with a time of 5:08:26. Jacqueline Mariash, 28, finished second with a time of 5:10:34.

The event included a 3K run, 90K bike and a 21K run on a course that is lauded as one of the most scenic - and challenging - courses in the sport.
