The USA Triathlon Trade Team recently experienced a week of interaction with each other, elite-level coaches, and several USAT corporate sponsors as part of a team training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Trade Team athletes participated in orientation and team meetings, a photo shoot, various testing and training sessions, and received their team issue gear from a long list of USAT sponsors.

“The camp was a great opportunity for the Trade Team athletes to come together from different parts of the country and different disciplines of our sport to learn from our technical experts and our partners while getting to know each other better,” said USAT Sport Performance Director Scott Schnitzspahn.

From the training perspective, the athletes received instruction on running mechanics and drills from running coach Bobby McGee, swim technique work from Dr. Genadijus Sokolovas of Global Sport Technology, Inc., swim coaching from USAT Resident Swim Coach Mike Doane, and functional strength assessments from elite coach Bob Seebohar.

Several of the USAT corporate partners who are offering tremendous support to the Trade Team program were also on hand to introduce their gear to the athletes in person. Among the highlights of the sponsor presentations were several new product unveilings and scientific analysis of bike fit and aerodynamics. Blue Competition Cycles introduced their TRIAD time trial frame and unveiled two brand new bikes: the 2009 RC-8 road bike, the team issue bike that the Trade Team will ride in all draft legal competitions; and the RYNO, the full-suspension race bike for the members of the Trade Team racing in off-road events.

Colorado Premier Training and Retül were on hand to guide the athletes through precision bike fitting process that had athletes wired to Retül’s technology, dialing in the fit to maximize efficiency and power output on the new frames.

Skins hosted a clinic on their wearable energy line of compression garments including the Sport and Ice lines specifically designed to further the Skins mantra of breaking records legally.

Zone Labs Inc. introduced the athletes to another level of nutrition and neutraceutical supplements to aid in diet and performance.

“It was a great opportunity to meet the team and USA Triathlon staff,” said Mike MacConnell, director of sales & marketing at ZONE. “As a new partner the timing was perfect. The opportunity to speak with the group was very important.”

The technical teaching continued with a coordinated presentation from Garmin and Training Peaks to educate the athletes on how to get the most out of their training programs by interfacing the Garmin and Training Peaks tools to accurately measure and record every aspect of their competitive lifestyle. The crew from Training Peaks even joined the Trade Team for a training ride around Colorado Springs and through Garden of the Gods.

Other major Trade Team partners include Zipp Speed Weaponry, Rudy Project, USA Triathlon Wetsuits, Speedo, Squadra, Gatorade, Selle Italia, and AVIA.

By the end of the week, each athlete had received a mountain of gear from all of the team’s sponsors and the charge from USAT CEO Skip Gilbert to enjoy the competition while serving as an accessible link between the age group and elite athletes, to get involved in their local multisport communities, and to have a great season.
