CANTON, N.C. — With national titles on the line, 23 athletes stepped up to the challenge at the 2009 USA Triathlon Aquathlon National Championship on Sunday in Canton, N.C.

More than 400 athletes competed in the 1,500-meter swim, 5k run event amid heavy rains at the Lake Logan Episcopal Center.

The championship event was part of the two-day Lake Logan Multisport Festival, which included sprint and Olympic distance triathlons.

In addition to the national titles awarded in each age group, the top 10 athletes in each age group earned the opportunity to be a part of Team USA and represent the United States at the 2009 ITU Aquathlon World Championships on the Gold Coast of Australia in September. Learn more about Team USA.

This is the first time USA Triathlon has held the event in the eastern United States and the first national championship of any kind to be held in Haywood County, North Carolina.
