Harrington to Chair USA Triathlon Women’s Committee
The USAT Women’s Committee is focused on creating a resource for female athletes of all levels and socio-economic backgrounds and mentoring professional growth for women in the sport of triathlon. Having already met its goal of equalizing women-to-men triathlon participation, the Women’s Committee is concentrating on the quality of training and opportunities available for women in positions of authority and decision-making within associations that govern the sport.
She has served as a USAT volunteer at numerous local and national events and is well versed with the role women have traditionally played within the sport.
Joining Harrington on the committee are Kelle Burke (Coral Springs, Fla.), Candy Cheatham (Corpus Christi, Texas), Mariella de Jong (Houston, Texas), Marti Greer (Lubbock, Texas) and Barb Lindquist (Alta, Wyo.).
“I am extremely honored to chair the USA Triathlon Women’s Committee. Triathlon has a thrilling future in front of it, and we’re excited to give women a voice within the sport as it continues to grow,” said Harrington. “There are many amazing female leaders within the multisport community, and I look forward to hopefully working with all of them.”
Harrington is the co-founder and CEO of Government Contracting and Marketing Services LLC, a business development consulting group specializing in federal government procurement. After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, Harrington founded and handled the day-to-day operations of Joma Manufacturing, Inc., for more than 30 years. Joma Manufacturing is a precision metal parts production company based in her native Puerto Rico.
Harrington has chaired numerous boards and served as chairperson of the Committee for Women’s Affairs during her membership in Rotary International. In addition to her work with USAT, Harrington currently serves on the board of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Awilda resides in St. Petersburg, Fla., with her husband, USAT Board of Directors President Brian Harrington, and has raised one son and one daughter.
