LAUSANNE, Switzerland — The United States’ squad of Sarah Groff, Barrett Brandon, Gwen Jorgensen and Mark Fretta capped an exciting weekend of racing Sunday with a fifth-place finish at the 2011 ITU Team Triathlon World Championships.

The Americans combined for a time of 1 hour, 11 minutes, 32 seconds in the mixed team relay event, which saw each athlete complete a 265-meter swim, a 5-kilometer bike and a 1.5-kilometer run. Great Britain captured the title in 1:09:29. Visit triathlon.org for a complete recap and video highlights.

Groff (Hanover, N.H.) led off for the U.S. with a time of 19:38, which was just five seconds off the pace of Germany after the first leg. All leadoff athletes completed a 500m swim for safety reasons, according to ITU.

After Brandon (Fort Worth, Texas) raced the second leg for the U.S. in 17:06, Jorgensen (Milwaukee, Wis.) logged an 18:20 split as the No. 3 athlete. Fretta (Portland, Ore.) anchored the Americans with a time of 16:26 for the day’s 10th-fastest overall split.

The fifth-place finish for the U.S. improved on last year’s eighth-place showing in the same event.
