The International Triathlon Union Pan American Cup slate continued Sunday in Barbados with the 2012 Bridgetown ITU Sprint Triathlon Pan American Cup.
In a tightly contested men’s race, USA Triathlon National Team member Manuel Huerta (Miami, Fla.) finished third in 55 minutes, 36 seconds. Germany’s Daniel Unger was victorious in 55:32, and just four seconds separated the podium.
Greg Billington (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was sixth in 55:55, and Brian Lamar (Whittier, Calif.) finished 10th in 57:00 to give the U.S. three men in the top 10.
On the women’s side, Kaitlin Shiver (Melbourne, Fla.) finished fifth in 1:02:21 to lead the American women. Laurel Wassner (New York, N.Y.) was eighth in 1:04:43, and Anna Battiata (Mechanicsville, Va.) was 10th in 1:06:25 in her ITU debut.
Meanwhile much of the multisport world was focused on Lance Armstrong’s start at the Ironman 70.3 Panama on Sunday. Armstrong (Austin, Texas) led throughout much of the run before being passed late by eventual winner New Zealand ITU standout Bevan Docherty, who lifted the tape in 3:50:13. Armstrong posted a time of 3:50:55.
Two U.S. women earned podium finishes as Kelly Williamson (Austin, Texas) and Margaret Shapiro (Herndon, Va.) finished second and third in 4:19:11 and 4:19:34, respectively.
