USA’s Joyce Donaldson Named Triathlon Technical Official for 2012 Olympics
Olympic Games triathlon events set for Aug. 4 and 7 at London’s Hyde Park
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — American Joyce Donaldson (Sylvania, Ohio) has been selected by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) as one the 42 technical officials who will oversee and officiate the triathlon competition at the London Olympic Games.
The duties of the technical officials are to conduct the competition in accordance with the ITU Competition Rules. They are assigned to registration, start, finish, transition area, swim, bike, run, wheel stations, aid stations, technology and vehicle control. An adequate number of technical officials will be assigned to each area and will be responsible for the enforcement of ITU Competition Rules within their assigned jurisdiction.
“I am honored and very proud to be a part of the London Olympic Games Technical Officials Team, and appreciate the confidence afforded in me by being chosen,” Donaldson said. “As an International Technical Official, I have worked diligently for the sport that I love and am glad that I can be there to support the American athletes and provide any assistance to the entire USA Triathlon team that I can. Seeing the Olympic flame burning each evening gives a feeling of hope and inspiration to us all. It is an incredible feeling, and I am very proud to be a part.”
Donaldson has been a member of USA Triathlon since 1985 and currently works as an event organizer, USA Triathlon official and ITU official. She also serves on the ITU Technical Committee and is the coordinator of the USA Triathlon ITU Technical Officials Program.
After Donaldson stopped competing due to injuries in the late 1980s, she continued to be involved with multisport in her roles as event organizer and official. She assisted ITU with the first-ever draft-legal event in the world in 1995 and has traveled extensively as a Level III International Technical Official. Donaldson worked the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, as well as the 2007 and 2011 Pan American Games.
The selected Olympic Games officials hail from a record number of nations, with 25 different countries represented, three more than at the Beijing Olympic Games. Since Beijing 2008, the selected group of technical officials has overseen a combined 190 events at the ITU World Triathlon Series, World Championships and World Cups.
