Demarest, Hill Win National Aquathlon Titles

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. — More than 120 athletes competed for national titles and a chance to represent Team USA on July 28 at the 2012 USA Triathlon Aquathlon National Championship, held in conjunction with the Islander Aquathon at Luther Burbank Park.

Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.), who finished second overall at the 2011 Aquathlon National Championship, topped the field and the men’s 16-19 age group with a time of 56 minutes, 42.7 seconds in the 1,500-meter swim and 10-kilometer run event.

Alycia Hill (Tacoma, Wash.) was the top female finisher with a time of 1:02:59. Julianna Batizy-Morley (Centennial, Colo.) defended her 40-44 age group title from 2011 and placed second overall.

In addition to chasing national titles, athletes also were competing for spots on Team USA for the 2012 ITU Aquathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, on Oct. 17. The top 10 finishers in each age group, rolling down to 14th place, are eligible for a Team USA berth. Team USA is comprised of amateur athletes who represent the United States at each ITU World Championship event. Click here for more on Team USA.
