Southeast Region Junior Team Wins Mixed Relay at Junior and Youth National Championship

WEST CHESTER, Ohio — The Southeast Region Junior Team of Johanna Gartman, Hunter Honeycutt, Devon Dabney and Luke Farkas won the fast-paced mixed relay event at the 2012 USA Triathlon Junior & Youth National Championship on Sunday at Voice of America Park.

The Southeast team gave Farkas, who won the Junior Elite National Championship on Saturday, the lead heading into the last leg. The team finished with a time of 1 hour, 3 minutes, 12 seconds.

“It’s different when you’re winning with a team,” Honeycutt said. “It’s great to win individually, but when you’re with a team you’re all sharing it together, so it’s that much better. The first day is so intense, but the relay is just a lot of fun.”

The Z3 Red Team of Jenny Brown, Spencer Clark, Tamara Gorman and T.J. Gleason placed second in 1:03:24. The Phenomena Triz A squad of Breanna Hemming, Michael Rees, Ryan Sotebeer and Eli Hemming placed third in 1:03:53.

Also on Sunday, USA Triathlon also announced the Development Team National Champions. West Chester was the third and final development team event to count in the standings for 2012. The Z3 Junior Triathlon Team won the season title with 31,118 points. The Southeast Region Junior Team was second with 29,201 points and the Endorphin Fitness was third with 17,945 points.

"This weekend's championship results were a testament to the hard work put in by a dedicated group of athletes and coaches representing every corner of the U.S.," said Steve Kelley, USA Triathlon's Athlete Development Coordinator. "The bar has been raised yet again. We had a great host in the West Chester community. VOA Park ranks among the best venues I've seen for draft-legal racing. I know a lot of athletes have already marked their 2013 calendars with plans to return to Ohio."
