BUTTE, Mont. — Landen Beckner and Julie Zickovich raced to convincing victories at Sunday’s USA Triathlon Winter Triathlon National Championships at the Powderhound Winter Triathlon at Homestake Lodge.

Each competitor completed a 5-kilometer run, 10-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer Nordic ski — all on snow.

After finishing third at last year’s Winter Nationals, also at Homestake Lodge, Beckner (Helena, Mont.) took advantage of four inches of fresh snow Sunday to top the podium this time around in 1 hour, 2 minutes, 50 seconds. Zickovich (Bozeman, Mont.) improved on her fourth-place finish from 2012 with a time of 1:29:57, well in front of her closest female competitor.

Joining Beckner on the men’s overall podium was Matthew Sheeks, who was second in 1:07:38, and Adam Wirth, who took third in 1:09:01.

Petra Davis placed second on the women’s side in 1:58:38, while Aimee Chelbnik finished third in 2:10:08.

Sunday’s Winter Nationals marked the beginning of the 2013 USA Triathlon National Championship slate, which includes 13 events of varying distances and disciplines. Visit for a full schedule.
