Olympian Gwen Jorgensen (St. Paul, Minn.) picked up where she left off in her first race of 2013 with a runner-up finish Saturday at the Devonport OTU Sprint Triathlon Oceania Championships in Australia. Jorgensen covered the sprint-distance course in 1 hour, 4 minutes, 27 seconds to earn her 11th career podium finish on the ITU circuit. She closed with a 17:25 5k run split.

Jodie Stimpson of Great Britain earned the win in 1:03:34, with Ireland’s Aileen Reid taking third in 1:05:10.

Matt Chrabot (Virginia Beach, Va.) was 19th on the men’s side in 1:02:54 to open his 2013 season.

On Feb. 17, Americans William Huffman (Colleyville, Texas) and Greg Billington (Colorado Springs, Colo.) raced to podium finishes at the Roatan ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup in Honduras.

Huffman was second in the Olympic-distance event in 2:03:42 to claim his first career Pan American Cup podium finish, while Billington grabbed third in 2:04:18 to notch his fourth career Pan American Cup podium showing.

Another rising star reached the podium in January, as Anna Battiata (Richmond, Va.) finished third at the La Paz ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup in Argentina on Jan. 13. The 2012 USA Triathlon Rookie of the Year, Battiata covered the Olympic-distance course in 2:23:31 for her second career Pan American Cup podium. 

The first domestic ITU event of the season is slated for Saturday, March 9 in Clermont, Fla. Olympians Sarah Groff and Jarrod Shoemaker, as well as 2012 Rookie of the Year Lukas Verzbicas are among the standouts on the start list for the sprint-distance event.
