Jorgensen Speeds to Sixth at ITU World Triathlon Hamburg
Action continues Sunday with the ITU Mixed Relay World Championships
Hamburg, Germany — USA Triathlon National Team member Gwen Jorgensen demonstrated her strength on the run as she raced her way to sixth at Saturday’s International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Hamburg, the sixth stop of the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Series.
Jorgensen (St. Paul, Minn.) covered the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run course in 58 minutes, 3 seconds to earn a sixth-place finish after trailing most of the field until the final lap of the run. The run leg made the difference for Jorgensen, whose 15:31 5k run split was the fastest of the day by more than 30 seconds.
Racing in her home country, Germany’s Anne Haug broke into a sprint with 800 meters to go to clinch the win, finishing in 57:21. Non Stanford of Great Britain held on for second in 57:35, just ahead of teammate Jodie Stimpson who took third in 57:36.
Sarah Groff (Hanover, N.H.) led for the U.S. early in the race, exiting the water in a front pack of five, including Spain’s Carolina Routier and Brazilian Pamela Oliveira. Groff helped to push the pace for the lead pack of 35 women on the 5-lap bike course, working to keep distance on the chase group. A crash in the final lap of the bike caused Groff to lose contact with the leaders heading into transition.
Haug, Stanford and Stimpson were first out on to the run and maintained a solid pace to stay in podium positions, while Jorgensen chipped away at the competition and made her way into sixth. Kaitlin Donner (Melbourne, Fla.) finished 14th in 58:31 for her best finish on the World Triathlon Series circuit.
With two races left in the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Series, Jorgensen remains in third in the World Triathlon Series rankings behind Haug and Stimpson.
Following the women’s race, the men took to the course, where Joe Maloy (Wildwood Crest, N.J.) finished as the top American in 21st with a time of 52:47. Great Britain brothers Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee finished first and second, respectively, both logging a time of 51:05 with Jonathan just edging out Alistair at the line. Spain’s Javier Gomez was third in 51:14.
Race action continues Sunday in Hamburg with the 2013 ITU Mixed Relay World Championships. Live coverage begins at 9 a.m. ET on triathlonlive.tv.
