Hy-Vee Triathlon
With a consistently deep field, the Hy-Vee Triathlon in Des Moines, Iowa, once again brought pros from around the world to compete for the largest prize purse of any Olympic-distance race. Following a slight delay due to weather, Spain’s Javier Gomez took first just a week after his podium finish in the ITU World Triathlon Stockholm. Gomez was first out of the water but was reeled in by Hunter Kemper (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Greg Bennett (Boulder, Colo.) over the 40k bike leg. Heading into the run, Gomez slowly started chasing down the U.S. elites out front. He passed both Kemper and Bennett with the fastest run split of the day to take first with a time of 1:45:57. Kemper followed only 12 seconds back, taking second place in 1:46:09. Bennett rounded out the podium in third with a time of 1:47:10.

In the women’s field, Australian Emma Moffatt and Melissa Hauschildt led the way, finishing 1-2.  Moffatt had a lengthy lead on Hauschildt, who was able to significantly close the gap with one of the top bike splits of the day. Despite Hauschildt with the fastest run split of the day, Moffatt held her off to finish first with a time of 1:57:04. Hauschildt finished second in 1:58:30 and Svenja Bazlen of Germany took third in 1:58:48. Lauren Goss (Clermont, Fla.) was the top American finisher in fifth.
