More than 400 age-groupers race for national titles, Team USA spots
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — More than 400 age-group athletes specializing in the run-bike-run format will race for national titles and Team USA spots Saturday at the USA Triathlon Long Course Duathlon National Championships, held in Cary, N.C., in conjunction with the Cary Du Classic presented by The Happy Tooth.
All competitors will complete a 5-mile run, followed by a 32-mile bike and a second 5-mile run. Action is slated to begin at 7 a.m. EDT. Visit usatriathlon.org for complete event information.
Jeff Wilson (Copley, Ohio), who won the men’s 25-29 age group one year ago, is on the start list for Saturday’s event. Wilson also earned a bronze medal at the 2013 ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championships. David Burkhart (Brighton, Mich.) is a two-time national champion in the 55-59 age group, and will compete in the 60-64 age group this year against Mike Lies (Lawrenceburg, Ind.), the defending champion in the division from 2013.
The Long Course Duathlon National Championships also serve as the lone qualifier for Team USA for the 2014 ITU Long Course Duathlon World Championships, which will take place Sept. 6-7 in Zofingen, Switzerland. The top 18 finishers in each age group (rolling down to 25th place) will qualify for Team USA. U.S. age-groupers have earned five medals at the last two Long Course Duathlon Worlds, which were also held in Zofingen.
Team USA is comprised of the nation’s top multisport athletes who represent the U.S. at each ITU World Championships event. Visit usatriathlon.org for more on Team USA.
