Athletes are required to display race numbers throughout the duration of their event for a variety of reasons. Race directors should inform athletes of the necessity of bib numbers as this is how safety personnel identify athletes in the event of an emergency. Officials and race staff also need to adequately see a racers number to track athletes throughout the course. All race directors should be aware of the following rule and enforce it at their events:
3.4f Race Numbers. Participants shall plainly display their race numbers at all times, and shall maintain the race number in an unaltered, unobstructed and readable state at the start and finish gates, in the transition areas, and on the course. Any violation of this Section shall result in a variable time penalty.
