Proposals 1-6 and Pro and Cons

Three of the following bylaw change proposals differ in language from that published in USA Triathlon Life magazine as a result of vote to amend on the July 13 Board of Directors teleconference meeting.  In summary:

  • Proposal #3 language and grammar were improved with no change in what the proposal seeks to accomplish.
  • Proposal #4 language and grammar were improved with no change in what the proposal seeks to accomplish.
  • Proposed hiatus requirements of proposal #5 were changed from the number of years served to one half of the number of years served.

Redline document showing exact changes is attached to the July 13, 2009 meeting minutes, the draft of which is posted on the USA Triathlon website.

Letter from the Board President

 (USA Triathlon Members,

The nomination period for candidates to serve on Regional Councils and the National Board of Directors of USA Triathlon begins on May 1. I encourage any member willing to commit to represent the interests of their fellow athletes to their Regional Council or the National Board to get involved. As mentioned in the call for nominations elsewhere in this magazine, there are seats up for election on every Regional Council as well as four positions on the National Board of Directors. The requirements to be placed on the ballot are probably not as difficult as you may think, so please check it out.

What they do:

  • The National Board of Directors has general charge of the business affairs and activities of USA Triathlon and defines the policies to be followed in carrying out the purposes of USA Triathlon as set forth in USAT’s Bylaws.
  • Regional Council Members uphold the mission of USA Triathlon in the 10 geographic Regions that make up USAT.

Time and travel commitments:

  • Members elected to a Regional Council are expected to participate in e-mail discussions and teleconference meetings throughout the year, and attend at least one in-person meeting in their Region.
  • Members of the National Board of Directors are expected to participate in frequent e-mail exchanges, teleconferences at least monthly, and attend at least 3 in-person meetings per year that typically last 2-3 days, including travel. Board members typically also serve as a member of (or as a liaison to) one or more of the committees vital to USAT’s continued success.

Board Directors and Council Members don’t get compensated for their service, but are reimbursed for travel and lodging expenses directly related to their duties.

It has been my experience working with members of both the National and Regional governance organizations that once involved, you will enjoy working with an incredibly enthusiastic bunch of like-minded athletes having fun working to further the sport they love. Please consider joining us, and running for a position on your Regional Council or National Board of Directors.

Rob Kasper
President, USA Triathlon Board of Directors
