Q&A with Mideast Council Michigan Representative Michael Wendorf

Why should triathletes make it a point to race the Mideast Regional Championship?
"The Mideast Regional Championship represents a unique opportunity to compete among other triathletes from across the region in a beautiful and distinctive natural setting just minutes from Ann Arbor, Mich., and all the pre and post races opportunities that a major world class university town offers visitors. The swim is in a sandy bottom, spring-fed lake, the bike course traverses a wildlife and waterfowl reserve that is home to one of the three top migratory bird routes in our entire country and dotted with several historical buildings and a pioneer farm. The run incorporates both dirt roads and a well maintained trail. The entire course is shaded and athletes can be assured of wonderful and unique race amenities. In addition, the top 33 percent of athletes in each age group automatically qualify for the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship to be held this August in Milwaukee, Wis."
How big of a role does this event play in the success of the Mideast Region?

"This Olympic-distance event was created specifically in response to the request of athletes within the region for an early season, stand alone championship on a challenging but fair course in a centrally located, destination type venue. Based on feedback received from last year's participants, the event exceeded the expectations of everyone. The venue comfortably accommodates 600 athletes in a beautiful and pristine park setting that is easy to reach and with reasonable over night options in nearby Chelsea or Ann Arbor, Mich."
In addition to their races, what can competitors look forward to?
"Every competitor can expect to receive a unique finisher prize and a t-shirt custom designed by Jef Mallet, creator of the nationally syndicated comic strip "Frazz." In addition, all athletes who finish in the top 33 percent of their age group and qualify for Age Group Nationals will be awarded a second t-shirt with the USAT logo and event and that also proclaims on the back, 'I qualified for Age Group Nationals.' These 'I qualified' shirts are awarded regardless of whether the qualifying athlete actually goes to age group nationals and are only available at this event."
Why should triathletes make it a point to race the Mideast Regional Championship?
"This is a unique opportunity to race a Mideast Championship as a stand alone event. It is a unique race in a unique venue where everybody will feel like a champion."
In addition to their races, what can competitors look forward to?
"Competitors can also expect great post race food and a festival atmosphere at this event. In addition, there are numerous outstanding recreational opportunities within minutes of the the race venue. Nearby Chelsea is home to actor Jeff Daniels' nationally recognized Purple Rose theatre and the highly acclaimed Common Grille. Just down the road is Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan. The many food, cultural and sport activities to be found in Ann Arbor are too numerous to list but include the "Big House" and everything one would expect to find on the campus of a major research university."

How many competitors are you expecting in 2014?
"The event can easily accommodate 600 athletes."

Summarize what athletes can expect from the Olympic-distance course.
"The course features a rectangular swim in a sandy bottom, spring fed lake. The bike course features rollers and traverses a nature reserve. Cyclists may by accompanied by low flying and primordial looking and sounding sand hill cranes that sometimes like to race the course as well. The run is mostly on well shaded dirt roads and also feature some rollers and ends with a short leg on a well maintained park trail. The course is challenging but fair and was created to host this championship event."
What is one thing competitors don’t know about this event?
"A true destination event, the Mideast Regional Championship offers athletes of all levels and aspirations an opportunity to compete in a friendly, festival atmosphere with other triathletes from across the region on a beautiful and fair course."
