Sprint Nationals -- Can You Make the Grade?

<< backCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ( Feb. 12 2007 )

Do you have what it takes to challenge members of the USA Triathlon staff for sprint triathlon bragging rights?

Bring a team to compete at the 2007 USAT Sprint National Championship on Sunday, August 19 in Aurora, Colo., and match up against a team of USAT staff members. If your team beats the USAT team, you will win fun prizes.

Prizes will also be awarded for best team uniforms (costumes).

Here’s how it works:

  • Teams of three
  • Each team member completes the entire race
  • Choose from four divisions based on speed and experience (see below)
  • Or choose to compete in the Relay division, with the swim, bike, and run legs divided among each member of the team
  • Take on a USAT staff team in each division
  • Pass the test (and beat the USAT staff) and your team wins!

Here are the divisions (with average sprint times) and the USAT staff members competing:

Newbie (0 to 1 races completed)
1. Liz Tucker, race director certification coordinator
2. Angie Murphy, national events assistant
3. Bryan Doerer, national sales manager

“This is a great way to get the USAT staff excited about the national championship. We work really hard ensuring program and organizational success that we sometimes forget about the thrill of the race,” said USAT Multisport Development Manager Shannon Votruba. “This challenge gives the USAT staff as much of a reason to get involved in the sport as it does for all of our participating members.

“This challenge is meant to be fun and exciting. It’s not about who wins or loses (although Team C is kicking it into high gear), but about smiling, laughing, and cheering on your team. This is a great way to show the fun side of triathlon; you’ve worked so hard to get to the race, now have fun doing it!

“One of our goals in development is to encourage teamwork and fun through racing. Triathlon is by nature a very individualized sport. But through the success of clubs and relays we are starting to become a team sport where we can rely on others to help us become more successful.”

The Rattlesnake Triathlon has been called “one of the best triathlons in the area.” It has sold out the previous two years, so don’t wait to register. Registration opens March 1.

Though this is a national championship event, athletes do not need to qualify to enter. Registration is open to anyone looking to compete for an age group and national title.

An Olympic distance triathlon is scheduled for Saturday, August 18 at the same venue.
