USAT Crowns Duathlon National Champions

Craig Greenslit and Amy Kloner took the overall titles at the USA Triathlon Duathlon Short Course National Championships on Sunday in Mason, Ohio.

It was the third-straight year the event was help at this course near Mason High School, outside Cincinnati.

The 10k run, 40k bike, 5k run event featured 243 amateur athletes competing for age group national titles and for slots to be a part of Team USA at the 2008 ITU Short Course Duathlon World Championships in Rimini, Italy (see qualification details below).

For the men, the 37-year-old Greenslit (Berthoud, Colo.) finished in 1:55:29 to get top honors and a national title in the 35-39 age group. Jeff Miller (Lewistown, Pa.) won the 40-44 age group and finished second overall in 1:55:51, while Scott Myers (Wellston, Ohio) won the 30-34 age group to finishe third overall in 1:56:39.

Kloner (Atlanta, Ga.), 30, earned a national title in the 30-34 category – to go along with her overall championship – finishing in 2:11:18. She was followed in second by 30-34 runner-up Gail Kattouf (Greenville, S.C.) in 2:14:10, and third place finisher and 20-24 age group winner Sara Hickey in 2:14:43.

Five athletes repeated their titles from 2006, led by Miller and Myers. Also repeating were M50-54 Curt Eggers (Rochester, N.Y.), M70-74 Roger Brockenbrough (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and F45-49 Kristin Villopoto (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Villopoto also defended her title in the master’s category.

The day’s activities also featured the Qwikie Du 5k run, 20k bike, 5k run that drew 34 competitors. Richard Kattouf (Greenville, S.C.), 36, grabbed the overall men’s title with a time of 1:16:00, while 17-year-old Sam Patty (Cincinnati, Ohio) was the women’s winner in 1:30:22.

World Championship Qualification
The first three finishers in each age group automatically qualified for Worlds, with spots rolling down to fifth place. The 2008 Duathlon National Championship will qualify the top seven finishers per age group with spots rolling down to 10th place. The remaining spots will be awarded at four regional qualifiers to be announced later this summer. Each regional qualifier will have two spots per age group with the roll down going to fifth place.
