2008 Election Information

 USA Triathlon Member,

May 1 begins the nomination period for candidates to serve on both Regional Boards and the National Board of Directors of USA Triathlon. If you’ve been benefiting from the sports of triathlon as a member of USAT and have considered getting involved to support your federation, you might think about service on your Regional Board of Directors or the National Board. As mentioned in the call for nominations below, there are seats up for election on every Regional Board as well as four positions on the National Board of Directors.

What do Directors do? The National Board of Directors has general charge of the business affairs and activities of USA Triathlon and defines the policies to be followed in carrying out the purposes of USA Triathlon as set forth in USAT’s Bylaws. Regional Directors uphold the mission of USA Triathlon in the 10 geographic Regions that make up USAT.

What are the time and travel commitments? Directors elected to a Regional Board are expected to participate in e-mail discussions and teleconference meetings throughout the year, and attend at least one in-person meeting in their Region. Members of the National Board of Directors are expected to participate in frequent e-mail exchanges, teleconferences at least monthly, and attend at least three in-person meetings per year that typically last 2-3 days, including travel. Board members typically also serve as a member of (or as a liaison to) one or more of the committees vital to USAT’s continued success.

How would you benefit from Board service? Financially – you would not. Directors are not compensated for their service, but are reimbursed for travel and lodging expenses directly related to their duties. The personal rewards, however, are many. For one, you get to work regularly with like-minded folks that live and breathe the sport. I’ve had the pleasure of serving alongside All-American age group legends, race directors and announcers of some of the most significant events in the country, and world class professional athletes. Additionally, you get to work side by side with the finest staff ever assembled to run the operations of a National Governing Body of sport. Perhaps best of all, you get the satisfaction of participating in decisions that help make the best sport on the planet even better.

If you’ve benefited from USAT’s efforts to make your sport better over the years, maybe now is the time to chip in some effort of your own to help make USAT better. Consider running for a position on your Regional or National Board of Directors.

Rob Kasper
President, USA Triathlon Board of Directors
