The USA Kids Tri Arizona race, presented by the TriDave Legacy Trust and hosted in partnership with RipRoar on April 12, delivered an unforgettable day of youth sport, welcoming 242 young athletes for a high-energy celebration of triathlon.

From start to finish, the course in Scottsdale, Arizona, was filled with excitement, encouragement, and determination as kids ages 5-17 challenged themselves and experienced the thrill of triathlon. Families, volunteers, and spectators played a big role in creating an uplifting race-day environment, cheering every athlete across the finish line and helping turn effort into lasting confidence and joy.

The USA Kids Tri Arizona event showcased the strong and growing momentum for grassroots youth multisport engagement across the region, with participation nearly doubling since 2024 In addition, more local YMCAs have integrated youth triathlon programming.

This impact is made possible through the USA Triathlon Foundation, the charitable arm of USA Triathlon dedicated to transforming lives through sport by expanding access to swim, bike, and run. Generous support from the TriDave Legacy Trust directly funds the USA Kids Tri Arizona program, which provides Phoenix-area youth the opportunity to get involved with triathlon through introductory swim, bike and run clinics and programs, school and community center outreach, access to USA Triathlon Certified Coaches and entry to events.

Dave Alexander, founder of the TriDave Legacy Trust, has championed innovative programs to introduce youth and young adults to the sport in addition to USA Kids Tri Arizona, including the Scouting America Multisport Merit Badge and a gift to support the NCAA Women’s Triathlon Emerging Sport for Women initiative.

“Events like USA Kids Tri Arizona are a powerful reminder of what youth sport can be—fun, inclusive, and confidence-building from the very first start line,” said USA Triathlon Youth Events Pipeline Manager, Zoe Da Silva. “Through USA Triathlon’s youth initiatives, we’re working to expand access and create meaningful entry points into the sport, and that impact is only possible thanks to the incredible support of partners like TriDave. His commitment continues to play a critical role in helping us grow opportunities for the next generation.”

Among the 242 youth athletes who competed at USA Kids Tri Arizona included 11-year-old Peyton and 8-year-old Brooklyn, the daughters of 2024 Paralympic gold medalist and IRONMAN 70.3 triathlete Chris Hammer, who lives and trains in the Phoenix area.

“My favorite part of seeing them do a triathlon is how accomplished they feel afterwards,” said Hammer. “Triathlon is such a great sport because it challenges you in so many different ways. Kids need to learn to attack challenges head on, not being intimidated by them. I can’t think of a better sport than triathlon to teach them that.”

Peyton said she likes triathlon, “because it’s hard!”

Thanks to USA Kids Tri and the USA Triathlon Foundation, athletes like Peyton and Brooklyn participated in the sport of triathlon in a fun, safe, approachable environment.

For those inspired to get involved in youth triathlon, opportunities continue to expand nationwide through programs like the Splash & Dash Series and the Youth State Series, which provide racing experiences for kids ages 5-17.
