53 Clubs, One Lakefront: The Community Behind 2026 USA Triathlon Nationals

MILWAUKEE — Heather Lendway won her fourth national title at the 2026 USA Triathlon Nationals on Saturday. Asked about the win, she talked about the people around her. 

"Every time I do a triathlon, I meet somebody new or make a friend," she said. "This morning, someone needed a part to pump up their disc wheel. People share. People are nice. Somebody didn't have their bike, I was like 'I can get you a bike tomorrow.' It's just friendly people. People are happy for each other and supportive." 

That is the part of USA Triathlon Nationals that doesn't show up in the results. Across three days on the Milwaukee lakefront, 53 clubs brought athletes to the start line. 

The Clubs on the Ground  

The two largest club contingents in Milwaukee were Team Zoot and Team Varlo. 

The atmosphere along the course made an impression on the athletes racing through it. Sprint national champion Cheyenne Nixon, competing in her first USA Triathlon Nationals, pointed to the crowd support during the 5k run through Veterans Park. 

"I feel like the community support has been great," she said. "Like out on the run course, so many people were cheering, and that really helped get me through to the finish line." 

Collegiate Clubs Took Home National Titles  

Two of the weekend's overall individual titles went to athletes connected to collegiate club triathlon programs. 

Gus Platt, the men's Draft Legal Sprint national champion, is the president of the Penn State University collegiate club triathlon team. The 20-year-old covered the course in 59 minutes,15 seconds. 

Emerson Kiefer won the men's Olympic Distance national title in 1:53:14. A former NCAA swimmer at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Kiefer raced his first triathlon at age 7 and returned to the sport by joining the school's club triathlon team in his first year of graduate school. 

"Triathlon is a branch off of swimming, which I like," Kiefer said. "And it offers more opportunities to get other sports involved and train with other people."

Teams With a Bigger Mission  

Some of the weekend's most memorable team presence had nothing to do with the podium. 

More than a dozen athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities raced in Milwaukee, each supported by and representing 1% Better, the nonprofit of Chris Nikic — the first person with Down syndrome to finish an IRONMAN triathlon and a 2021 ESPY Jimmy V Award for Perseverance recipient.  

The organization's goal is making physical activity obtainable for all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities so they can lead longer, healthier lives. Nikic finished Saturday's Olympic Distance race to triumphant applause and cheers from spectators, and he and his more than a dozen teammates raced Sunday's Sprint Distance National Championships. 

Dare2Tri won the Paratriathlon division of Saturday evening's Mixed Relay National Championships in 1:22:57. More than 70 paratriathletes raced Sunday's Paratriathlon National Championships, competing for national titles across six classifications.
