COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon today announced Chris Nikic, the first person with Down Syndrome to complete a full IRONMAN, will deliver the Day Two Keynote Speech on Saturday, Jan. 9, at 2027 Endurance Exchange in Orlando, Florida. His father and coach, Nik Nikic, will join him on stage to share the 1% Better System behind Chris's journey to the finish line.

USA Triathlon’s Endurance Exchange conference is the multisport industry's annual conference, bringing together coaches, race directors, club owners, officials, athletes, and brands who keep the sport running.

This year's conference runs Jan. 8–10, 2027, at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida, and will feature interactive workshops, expert panels, presentations, and dedicated networking sessions designed to foster collaboration and learning.

The Nikics’ keynote brings a story that sits at the intersection of athletic achievement, coaching, community, and the question of who gets to see themselves at the start line.

In November 2020, Chris crossed the finish line at IRONMAN Florida with minutes to spare before the 17-hour cutoff, becoming the first person with Down Syndrome to complete the 140.6-mile distance. Since then, he has become a three-time IRONMAN finisher, a four-time Guinness World Record holder, a two-time ESPY Award winner, and a Global Ambassador for Special Olympics and Laureus.

Behind Chris's accomplishments is a coaching philosophy built around getting 1% better every day. Nik Nikic spent two decades helping companies including United Airlines and Enterprise improve performance through his 1% Better System before adapting the approach for his son. Together, the father and son team turned a seemingly impossible goal into a process built around daily habits, accountability, discipline, and perseverance.

The keynote, “1% Better: The Road to Full Potential,” will tell the story from both sides of the finish line.

Chris will share what it took to pursue a goal that had never been accomplished by a person with Down syndrome, including the physical, intellectual, and societal barriers he encountered along the way, and Nik will present the coaching perspective, breaking down how the 1% Better System helped turn a 140.6-mile goal into daily actions and how those principles can apply far beyond sport. Their story connects directly to the people working to grow and shape multisport. Coaches, race directors, officials, and club leaders are increasingly creating opportunities for athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities and other diverse needs to participate in sports. The Nikics experience offers a look at what it means to build confidence, establish sustainable habits, communicate effectively, and create an environment where athletes can pursue ambitious goals.

2027 Endurance Exchange is built around the theme “Where Innovation Meets Endurance,” , each day with its own focus.

Day one is centered around Innovation and Intelligence, exploring the technology and ideas reshaping how athletes train and how events are run. Day two shifts to Human Connection and Community: — the relationships, culture, and shared experiences that make endurance sport more than a collection of individual races. Day three looks ahead  t o LA28, examining the opportunities and momentum surrounding the future of multisport.
