The road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games is officially open!

Monday, May 18, 2026 marked the beginning of the Olympic Qualification Period. This means athletes can now begin earning quota points for their country for the LA28 Olympic Games in Venice Beach.

A maximum of 55 men and 55 women will race in Venice Beach, with a maximum of three women and three men from any one country able to qualify. There are several potential routes to the start line for athletes inside the top 160 in the World Triathlon rankings on May 18, 2028.

These pathways are all to allocate quota places only. USA Triathlon and every other National Olympic Committee of each country will determine which athletes will represent them at LA28 in the women's and men's individual races and the Mixed Relay. USA Triathlon's LA28 Olympic selection criteria will be published at a later date.

The Qualification Period runs from May 18, 2026 to May 18, 2027, and May 19, 2027 to May 18, 2028. An athlete’s 12 best scores, and no more than 8 from races shorter than the Olympic distance, will count in the final rankings.

The first opportunity for athletes to earn quota points is the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series Alghero on May 30.

USA Triathlon will continue providing updates on qualification standings, selection criteria, and timelines. With the Games on home soil and the qualification window now open, the countdown to LA28 has officially begun.

As the host nation, the U.S. is guaranteed a Mixed Relay team composed of two men and two women, provided all athletes meet the eligibility requirements. This ensures USA Triathlon can focus on preparing a competitive team on home soil at LA28.

Beyond the host slot, there will be multiple pathways to qualification:

How to Earn Quota Places for LA28
There are a possible eight different pathways by which quota places will be earned, with the following pathways applying to both men and women in all cases:

1 - TWO places for the U.S. as host nation (the U.S. will automatically have two women and two men represented at LA28)

2 - TWO places for the 2026 Mixed Relay World Champions (rolling down if USA win).

3 - TWO places for the 2027 Mixed Relay World Champions (rolling down to second, third, fourth, etc., if country already allocated via pathways 1 and 2).

4 – SIXTEEN places determined by the Mixed Relay Olympic Qualification Ranking, guaranteeing one per continent not yet represented, and if inside the top 15. (rolling down if the country is already allocated by pathway 1, 2, and 3, or if there is no country in the top 15 from the continent).

5 – TWENTY ONE places via Individual Olympic Ranking – the 21 highest ranked and eligible athletes - on May 18, 2028. Only those NOCs with three or more athletes inside the top 30 can secure the maximum three quota places.

6 – Up to TWO Universality quota places for countries identified by the IOC, with countries able to apply for an invitation and the commission making its decision. If not allocated, those one or two places will be allocated according to the individual Olympic Qualification Ranking.

7 – A brand new pathway for LA28 qualification will allow up to FIVE quota places – one per continent –  for Continental Games New Flag nations who have not yet got a place. Awarded via the 2026 Asian Games and the 2027 African Games, Pan American Games, European Games and Pacific Games. If no eligible athlete(s), the place(s) revert to the Individual Olympic Qualification Ranking, irrespective of the continent.

8 – FIVE quota places - one per continent – will go to the World Triathlon Rankings New Flag – the top-ranked athlete from NOCs not yet with a quota place. If no eligible athlete(s), the place(s) revert to the Individual Olympic Qualification Ranking, irrespective of the continent.

The points allocation will be the same for WTCS and T50 and World Cup and Challenger events when the Triathlon World Tour begins in 2027.
