Kelly Wetteland is a member of the University of Arizona’s inaugural triathlon recruiting class, bringing a strong foundation in swimming and running to her triathlon career. Originally a student-athlete on the swim team at the University of New Mexico, Wetteland transferred to Arizona Swimming & Diving before joining Arizona Triathlon.
A standout multi-sport athlete, Wetteland grew up swimming and running. She earned state titles in the 100-meter breaststroke and 200-meter individual medley, while also finishing as the state runner-up in cross country. She set Los Alamos High School records in the 800-meter run, 200-meter individual medley and 100-meter breaststroke. Wetteland also competed in swimming and cross country while living in Tennessee.
Both of her parents were collegiate athletes, with her father, Chris, swimming and playing water polo at Slippery Rock University and her mother competing as a gymnast at Central Michigan University. Her younger sister is currently a swimmer at UCLA. Her family’s connection to triathlon even predates her own career — her parents’ first date came after her father won a triathlon at age 13, with the prize being a round of mini golf for two.
Wetteland is currently pursuing double majors in law and political science and plans to continue her education with a master’s degree in International Security Systems.
For Wetteland, triathlon is the perfect intersection of athletic challenge, adventure and a lifelong passion for competition.
