Donor Support Helps Power Paratriathlon Talent ID Camp
by USA Triathlon Foundation
This winter, USA Triathlon hosted a Paratriathlon Talent Identification Camp at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Designed to develop the next generation of Paralympians, the camp brought together athletes identified through the Virtual Combine process who had already demonstrated high-level swim and run performances.
Over four days, the group of paratriathletes trained under the guidance of USA Triathlon Para Certified Coaches in a high-performance environment. The athletes represented a wide range of classifications: a wheelchair athlete, a visually impaired athlete and five ambulatory athletes, most of whom are amputees. Half of the athletes had only begun competing in triathlon within the past year, while others were entirely new to the sport but already excelling in two of the three disciplines.
Each athlete arrived with a story that carried them to this camp. A former Navy boxer, a semi-professional soccer player, athletes navigating life after traumatic injuries, and competitors adapting to conditions that continue to evolve. For many athletes, the experience became the first step toward something much bigger.
Since 2024, five athletes identified through these camps have earned spots on the U.S. Paratriathlon Resident Team in Colorado Springs, and one athlete has been named to the U.S. Triathlon National Team. The ultimate goal remains clear: to see athletes who begin their journey here one day represent Team USA on the world stage.
Camps like these are made possible through the support of the USA Triathlon Foundation community. Donor support fuels the broader growth of paratriathlon, helping provide coaching, equipment, racing opportunities, and the environments that allow athletes to discover what they’re capable of.
These efforts are also part of Elevate28, the Foundation’s bold four-year campaign to grow the sport, expand access for all athletes, and prepare our elite athletes to compete on home soil at the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
