Silver Medal for Gwen Jorgensen at the 2023 World Triathlon Cup Miyazaki

MIYAZAKI, Japan – In the penultimate race of the world cup season, Gwen Jorgensen (Boulder, Colo.) secured a silver medal at the 2023 World Triathlon Cup Miyazaki on Saturday, October 28.

Crossing the Olympic-distance (1500-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike, 10-km run) finish line in two hours and one second, Jorgensen’s second-place adds to her season of podiums in the world cup series this year, bringing the total to five straight. It also showcases back-to-back medals after last weekend winning in Tongyeong, South Korea.

“Bianca [Seregni] had an amazing race today, I don’t know if I would have been able to run with her had I gotten off the bike with her. I am disappointed because I basically handed the race and win away with my T2. But Jeanne [Lehair], I was coming for her, I was like ‘come on, you just have to keep fighting, it’s now or never’ and so I just put in a surge and tried to not look back.”

Starting off the day, Jorgensen exited the swim down by 20 seconds, which put her into an initial chase pack on the bike. However, with eight laps to go through the course, the chase found the rhythm to catch the leaders halfway through.

However, another slow transition post ride caught Jorgensen at the back of the group heading into the run. Despite the setback, she was able to run down 13 athletes ahead of her to ultimately enter the blue carpet and grab the silver medal.

Her finish of 2:00:01 was just 18 seconds behind the victor, Bianca Seregni of Italy, who won in a time of 1:59:43. Closing the podium then came from Jeanne Lehair (LUX), who earned the bronze in a time of 2:00:10.

Jorgensen will now head to Vina Del Mar, Chile to compete in the final world cup race of the season, taking place on November 11.
