In high school, Smoragiewicz was a four-time South Dakota state champion in track and cross country events. He then ran collegiately at the NCAA Division I level for the University of Michigan. After taking a break from triathlon to run for Michigan, he returned and began competing as an elite triathlete in March 2017. Smoragiewicz is currently a member of the USA Triathlon Olympic Development Team. His family also has a history of competing in college athletics.
