DUATHLON & AQUATHLON NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Friday’s events kicked off with the Standard Duathlon National Championships, which featured a scenic 10-kilometer run around Lake Cunningham, followed by a 40k bike on the rolling hills, and finishing with a 5k run.

Jacob Capin (Milwaukee, Wis.) won his third overall national title at Multisport Nationals, powering to the win in the Standard Duathlon National Championships. He completed the course in a time of 2 hours and 13 seconds, averaging 5:37 per mile on the 10k run, 22.8 miles per hour on the 40k bike and 5:39 per mile on the 5k run.

A professor of physical therapy at Marquette University, Capin is a USA Triathlon Level II Certified Coach and former college basketball player at Christopher Newport University. Capin is also an accomplished IRONMAN triathlete, with several 70.3 wins in addition to his three national titles at Multisport National Championships

“It was the goal today (to win my third title), but I’m surprised I was able to do it,” said Capin who describes duathlon as the most difficult of multisport races. “Running off of a swim-bike is so much easier than running off of a run-bike. I think it’s one of the toughest races. Today was a lot of fun, in a Type-2 kind of way.”

Kirsten Sass (McKenzie, Tenn.) won the overall Standard Duathlon title in the women’s race with a time of 2:17:47, adding to her two Super-Sprint titles from Thursday.

Sass is a multiple-time national champion in the Standard Duathlon and a former winner of USA Triathlon Duathlete of the Year. She has also competed as a paratriathlon guide for athletes with visual impairments. She guided Paralympian Amy Dixon at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

“Multisport Nationals is such a celebration of the sport. The atmosphere is hands-down the most supportive,” Sass said. “I love the challenge (of multisport). It’s like putting together all the different pieces of a puzzle. It lets you test where your training is, what your strengths are and what you need to work on.”

The Standard Aquathlon National Championships took place in the afternoon, as athletes competed in a 1000m swim and a 5k run. The swim-run format is one of the fastest-growing and most accessible multisport formats.

Kennedy Rainwater (Brookfield, Wis.) took home her second consecutive overall women’s national title in Aquathlon, swimming and running to a time of 38:41. She held off previous winner and former Aquathlete of the Year, Kristen Doster by 8 seconds. Rainwater is an NCAA Division I swimmer at the University of Illinois.

The men’s overall Aquathlon national title went to Samuel Wen, who cruised to victory in a time of 34:24. Wen swims on the University of Texas club swim team and competes on the men’s club triathlon team.

In addition to racing for age group national championships, athletes also raced to qualify to represent age group Team USA at 2025 World Triathlon Age Group World Championships. For more information about Team USA, comprised of the nation’s top amateur multisport athletes who represent the U.S. at World Triathlon Age Group World Championship events, visit www.usatriathlon.org/our-community/age-group-team-usa.

More than 50 athletes are attempting to race five or more events for the chance to earn the title of “Multisport Master.” Athletes crowned as Multisport Master will receive a special belt buckle and be honored at the final Awards Ceremony on Sunday evening.
