Chase McQueen Leads U.S. Elites at 2025 World Triathlon Championship Series Alghero
by USA Triathlon
ALGHERO, Italy — Chase McQueen (Columbus, Ind.) turned in another career-best finish at a World Triathlon Championship Series race, placing 11th to lead the U.S. Elite Triathletes on Saturday, May 31 at the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Series Alghero.
Two weeks after his breakthrough 13th-place finish in Yokohama, McQueen improved two places to 11th on Saturday in Alghero, just 9 seconds away from a top-10 finish.
McQueen started his elite triathlon career as a member of USA Triathlon's elite development training group Project Podium. Since developing out of Project Podium, McQueen has seen success in Supertri competition, notably winning the 2024 Supertri E World Triathlon Championship. But he had never scored a top-15 finish in a WTCS race until this season.
On Saturday, McQueen, always a strong swimmer, emerged out of the water among the leaders and was in the lead group on the bike. He had familiar company on the bike, joined by U.S. Elite teammate Seth Rider (Germantown, Tenn.) in the bike pack of nine triathletes.
By the end of the nine laps of the bike leg, the lead pack had built a 1 minute, 45-second lead over the chase group. From there, the run belonged to Brazil's Miguel Hidalgo, who ripped off a 30:09 10k to win his first WTCS gold in 1:44:05. Australia's Matthew Hauser earned silver in 1:44:33 and Leo Bergere of France took bronze in 1:45:09.
McQueen's 11th-place finish in 1:46:34 paced the U.S. elites. His teammates finished close behind, with John Reed (Virginia Beach, Va.) placing 13th and Rider in 14th.
A Paris 2024 Olympian, Rider was a member of the U.S. Mixed Relay team that won silver in Paris last August. Alghero was his 2025 WTCS debut, as he started the season with two IRONMAN 70.3 races in Oceanside and St. George.
Reed has raced in all three WTCS events this season, with Alghero his best finish of 2025, following 26th and 21st-place finishes in Abu Dhabi and Yokohama.
Fellow U.S. Elite Darr Smith placed 30th in Alghero.
In the women's race, U.S. Elite Summer Rappaport (Thornton, Colo.) made her 2025 season debut. A Tokyo 2020 Olympian and longtime member of the U.S. Elite Triathlon National Team, Rappaport closed her 2024 season by earning back-to-back top-five finishes at World Cup events. She placed 28th on Saturday in Alghero.
U.S. teammate Gwen Jorgensen (Boulder, Colo.) came to Alghero aiming to build on her breakthrough fourth-place finish in Yokohama, her best finish since returning to the sport in 2023. Unfortunately, she left Italy empty-handed, lapped out of the bike after suffering a flat.
Paris 2024 Olympic gold medalist Cassandre Beaugrand won the women's race in Alghero, clocking a time of 1:55:55. Bianca Seregni of Italy earned the silver in 1:56:33, and Olivia Mathias of Great Britain earned her first career WTCS podium with the bronze in 1:57:04.
