Insurance
USA Triathlon has partnered with the Fairly Group to offer comprehensive insurance options for race directors. For specific policy questions you can contact USATriathlon@fairlygroup.com.
USAT provides comprehensive insurance coverage to all sanctioned events. The coverage provides liability coverage to protect race directors, sponsors, volunteers, officials, and participants. The athlete participant accident secondary medical coverage protects each participant for the day of the event.
Coverage for All Sanctioned Events#
Every USA Triathlon sanctioned event receives event liability and participant accident medical coverage in return for sanctioning with USA Triathlon. Learn more about these two coverages in the drop-down menu below.
USA Triathlon provides comprehensive liability insurance coverage to sanctioned events. The USA Triathlon policy automatically covers USA Triathlon race directors, sponsors, volunteers, officials, and participants while participating in sanctioned events.
Additional insureds beyond race directors, sponsors, volunteers, officials, and participants can be added sparingly and only if required by contract. Not all individuals/groups may qualify for additional insured status and an issuance of an insurance certificate does not guarantee coverage for the party requesting coverage.
Certificates should be requested from the USA Triathlon Portal (username: USATRIATHLON and password: Tri@thl0n#2025!) and must be requested prior to the date of the event. We encourage you to submit all insurance requests at least 72 hours prior to your event.
If you have any questions, please contact USA Triathlon Event Services or the Fairly Group.
When athletes purchase a USA Triathlon Membership, including an annual or one-day membership, a portion of those fees cover the cost to provide them with excess medical insurance. This coverage only extends to their participation in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event and is only available after the injured party has filed with any primary insurance policies. A Race Director must report all incidents to USA Triathlon via USA Triathlon Incident Reporting. No medical claim can be filed with USAT’s insurance until USA Triathlon has received the report.
Should a fatality or life-threatening incident occur at a USAT sanctioned event, the Race Director should follow the steps outlined in the Critical Incident Response Checklist.
Race Directors should contact Insurance@usatriathlon.org with any questions.
- Athletes must file with their primary healthcare provider (i.e. United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, traveler's insurance, etc.).
- Athletes will receive claims filing instructions from USA Triathlon once the race director submits an incident report. The athlete will file their claim directly with our third party claims processor, Administrative Concepts, Inc. (ACI) who will handle all aspects of the claim processing.
- Athletes will be required to pay a deductible. All athletes using USA Triathlon insurance will pay anywhere from $250 to $1,000 out of pocket and possibly more for uncovered expenses.
- Coverage limitations. Be advised that coverage may not apply to each and every claim. Additionally, coverage only extends to participants that have purchased a USA Triathlon annual or one-day membership and were injured through participation in a USA Triathlon Sanctioned Event.
- For questions, please contact insurance@usatriathlon.org.
