"In all my years of triathlon, this was the most fun I’ve ever had," said Clydesdale National Champion Lance Fargo (Ocean View, Del.) after racing the Mixed Relay National Championship at the 2022 USA Triathlon Multisport National Championships Festival in Irving, Texas.

Fargo teamed up with Kevin Gaston (Atlanta, Ga.), Grace Collar, 44 (Shelburne Falls, Ma.) and Leslie Battle (Warwick, R.I.) to win the Clydesdale & Athena national championship in the mixed relay, the exciting, high-paced and spectator-friendly National Championships format that made its USA Triathlon age group debut at Multisport National Championships Festival.

In the Mixed Relay, teams of four (in the order of man-woman-man-woman) compete, with each team member completing a 250m swim, 5k bike, 1.2k run triathlon before tagging their teammate. High-energy and fun, the Mixed Relay invites spectators to line the race’s tag zone and cheer as athletes finish their leg to tag their teammate.

“The energy at the finish line was intense. Between the spectators and all of the other team members, there was a lot more of a collected investment of encouragement than you would normally see in a race,” Fargo said about the 2022 race.

Athletes will again have the opportunity to race in the Mixed Relay National Championships at the 2023 USA Triathlon Multisport National Championships Festival, taking place April 19-23 in Irving, Texas!

It’s so short and just all-out from the get-go.” — Kirsten Sass (McKenzie, Tenn.), decorated national champion on racing the Super Sprint Triathlon Time Trial National Championships, which consists of a 250-meter swim, a 5k bike and 1.2k run and takes about 20 minutes to complete.

“This sport is fueled by competition, but I think even more so it’s inspired by an extremely kind and beautiful community. That was evident every day here.”Miguel Mattox (Mill Valley, Calif.), multiple-time national champion and a member of Leandri's winning Mixed Relay team.
